Otoplasty or Ear Correction surgery is referred to any surgery that involves correcting the ear shape. Protruding/ Prominent ears is the commonest condition for which otoplasty is performed. Procedure:
Otoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.
Pre operative assessment and essential markings are done, including the incision line. Photographs are taken.

An incision is placed behind the ear and the cartilage framework is exposed . Depending upon the cause , it is corrected. The excess cartilage is trimmed , the absent folds are created and sutures placed to fit the ear closer to the skull. A drain maybe placed. Following which the ear is adequately packed and dressed.
Side effects:
Swelling, pain, bruising, hematoma, rarely infection, recurrence.
Recovery:
On the third day the dressing is removed and the ear examined. The drain is removed removed and an elastic compression bandage is given to wear for at least 2-3 weeks. The sutures are removed between 7-10 days. The swelling takes nearly 2 months to completely subside and the final result to be seen. Sometimes massage is advised to help reduce swelling and give good shape.
Result:
The results can be seen immediately when dressing is removed , however swelling starts to increase which subsides and results can be seen in 2- 3 months.
