Abdominoplasty, also referred to as a “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure used to improve the shape of the tummy, remove excess skin, scars, stretch marks and fat from the tummy and in some cases, tighten the tummy muscles. This is primarily done to remove excess skin from the tummy that cannot be removed through exercise, such as excess skin caused by pregnancy or significant weight loss.
Procedure:
There are two types of abdominoplasty ( Partial and Full ), both of which are usually performed under general anaesthesia.
Pre operative assessment and essential markings are done, including the incision line. Photographs are taken.
It takes 3-5 hours.
Partially abdominoplasty which entails:
- making a large incision across the lower tummy.
- separating the skin from the abdominal wall below the belly button, removing excess fat and skin.
- pulling the remaining skin together and stitching it in place.
A Full abdominoplasty which entails:
- making a large incision from hip to hip across the lower tummy, just above the pubic area.
- making a second incision to separate the belly button from the surrounding tissue.
- separating the skin from the abdominal wall and realigning the abdominal muscles.
- removing excess fat and skin, making a new hole for the belly button and sewing it back in place.
- bringing the remaining skin together and stitching it in place.
Side effects:
Swelling, bruising, seroma, hematoma, wound dehiscence.
Recovery:
Most patients require a few nights in the hospital. There will be drains which is removed in 1 to 2 days. You will be discharged from the hospital with dressings on your tummy and a pressure garment. You would not be able to drive back home and would need assistance.
It takes about 6 weeks to fully recover and see the full effect of a tummy tuck. You’ll usually need to wear a pressure garment for 6 weeks to encourage your skin to heal properly and reduce swelling. Please take precautions such as
- Do not drive for several weeks after the procedure.
- Take 4 to 6 weeks off from exercise.
- Keep your knees bent while in bed to avoid putting strain on your stitches.
After 6 weeks, you should be able to stop wearing the corset and resume most of your normal activities.
Results:
Swelling and your inability to stand fully upright may obscure the final results of tummy tuck surgery . You should be standing tall and confident in your new slimmer profile within a week or two. The existing scars from a caesarean section may be incorporated into the new scar in women. The scar from a tummy tuck may take several months to a year to fade but it always remain. Following your tummy tuck, you will have a flatter, firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate to your body type and weight.
