Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Surgery Bangalore
Gynecomastia is a medical condition in which male breast tissue is larger than desired, giving the appearance of female breasts. Gynecomastia is also known as ‘male breast’, ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’.
Gynecomastia can affect men of any age, from pubescent boys to older men. However, the most common group to seek treatment are the adult males. It is caused by a hormonal disturbance that occurs in pubertal age which manifests as a gland, that grows gradually and results in women like breasts.
Other causes are:
- Genetic disorders.
- Systemic disease like liver or kidney failure.
- Tumours that produce specific hormones.
- Many cardiac medications, some antibiotics and tricyclic antidepressants are examples of drugs that can disrupt normal hormonal balance.
- Non-prescription or recreational drug use, such as anabolic steroids and marijuana.
There are four grades in gynecomastia (Grade 1 to 4) depending on the size of the gland, from minimal to large.
Gynecomastia Surgery (also known as Male Breast Reduction , Man Boob Reduction, or Chest Reduction Surgery) is a procedure that removes fat and glandular tissue from the male chest. The grades 3 and 4 will have loose skin post surgery which needs to be adjusted. Gynecomastia surgery is used to give the chest a more masculine shape.
Besides improved aesthetics, gynecomastia surgery has a slew of other advantages. For instance, it can boost self-esteem by restoring confidence in one’s body image. Furthermore, the procedure can alleviate physical discomfort caused by excessively large breasts, such as back pain or skin rashes caused by chafing. Furthermore, because Male Breast Reduction surgery removes excess glandular tissue, it can lower the risk of certain medical conditions such as gynecomastia-related cancers or benign tumours.
In very obese individuals, fat accumulation may mimic like Gynecomastia, but an expert can tell the difference between Gynecomastia Vs Fat accumulation.
Procedure:
Surgery for gynecomastia can sometimes be performed with a local anesthetic and sedative if the condition is minimal, like in Grade 1. If more extensive surgery is required, a general anaesthetic is usually required. The duration of surgery depends on the grade, between 1-2 hours.
Pre operative assessment and essential markings are done, including the incision line. Photographs are taken.
A small incision is made in the fold between the arm and chest, each side. This is used to infiltrate a solution into the chest in order to reduce bleeding, decrease pain and to mark the location for liposuction. At the start of the procedure, a solution containing adrenaline and local anaesthetic is infiltrated into both sides of the chest. Liposuction is then used to remove as much fat from the chest as possible. Then a periareolar incision is made and gland removed. It is important to keep some tissue behind the nipple to avoid a sunken nipple after surgery. All incisions are sutured. Whenever necessary, drains are placed side of the chest. Post procedure, a pressure garment is applied to chest.
Depending on your general health and the extent of the procedure, gynecomastia surgery can be performed as a day case or with a short hospital stay.
Side effects:
Swelling, bruising, seroma, hematoma, nipple superficial necrosis, loss of nipple pigmentation, asymmetry, recurrence .
Recovery:
The recovery time following gynecomastia is relatively short, typically, around 2 weeks.
- You may experience pain, a burning sensation, bruising, swelling and numbness around the operated site while healing. This is common.
- You may need to take a few days off work to rest depending on the extent of your procedure.
- It may be best to avoid driving for 10 to 14 days after surgery to reduce upper arm movements.
- Sutures are removed one week after surgery.
- You will wear the chest compression/ pressure garment for at least one to two months. This helps reduce swelling, bleeding and gives a good shape to the chest.
- Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, swimming, and strenuous sports should be avoided until advised.
Results:
Patients find this to be one of the most satisfying procedures, but it is important to note that results vary from patient to patient. The results of gynecomastia surgery are immediately visible. Post-surgical swelling and incision lines will fade with time. As you recover from surgery, your satisfaction with your new image should grow. The eventual result of your gynecomastia surgery may take 3-6 months. In general, if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and a normal weight range, the results are permanent.
