Axillary tail of Breast or Tail of Spence , is a normal extension of breast tissue into the axilla. This gland of tissue can enlarge in some women when there is a hormonal fluctuation like in puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Smaller swellings can be treated with liposuction alone. In large ones initially liposuction is done and then the gland excised. The incision line made is such that the final scar falls within the axilla, thus making the scar obscured. A drain is placed and left in situ for three days and pressure dressing done.
 
Side effects:
Swelling, bruising, seroma , hematoma, scar hypertrophy
 
Recovery:
You should be able to return home the same day or the next day. After two to three weeks, you should be able to resume normal activities.
  • The drain is removed in three days and dressing changed
  • A pressure garment is advised to wear to prevent collection. This is worn for 4-6 weeks.
  • Sutures removed after one week
  • Heavy lifting should be avoided for up to six weeks.
 
Results:
Results are immediately seen but final result visible from fourth week after surgery. You can observe improved mobility of the arms and most of the undesirable contours in the underarm area goes pretty much non-existent. Healthy lifestyle and weight control is recommended.
